May Day holiday countdown!

Want to visit Tibet but don't want a "special forces" style trip?

This May Day guide features 10 "lie-flat" ways to enjoy Lhasa.

For lazy travelers who don't like running around!

01 Watch the "Princess Wencheng" Live Show

Source: Princess Wencheng Large-Scale Live Show

Go watch the "Princess Wencheng" large-scale live show. The theater is built on Baoping Mountain at over 3,700 meters altitude. Despite being an epic production, you only need to sit back and be amazed!

The approximately 90-minute performance features hundreds of performers with visually stunning grandeur, as if traveling through a 1,300-year historical scroll.

(Tip: Remember to bring a thick coat. Lhasa's evening wind is a bit "overbearing.")

02 Night Cruise on the Lhasa River

Source: Love Fills the Lhasa River

Experience the Guinness-certified "Highest Altitude Night Cruise" — the Lhasa River night tour. This special experience was selected for Mafengwo's "2026 China Cultural Tourism New Experience Report" TOP100 list!

On the cruise deck, enjoy the cool plateau evening breeze while watching city building outlines reflected on the river. Sound and light fountain shows and ethnic dances perform continuously on both banks. The key point: no walking required! About 30-60 minutes total.

03 Food-Themed Sightseeing Bus

Source: Lhasa Cultural Tourism

The Lhasa food-themed sightseeing bus connects the Potala Palace, Lhasa River, and other core landmarks. You just sit in your seat and enjoy the flowing scenery of Lhasa.

The bus provides afternoon tea/dinner — eat, drink, and enjoy the beautiful views!

04 Visit the Tibet Museum

Enter this first-class museum on Norbulingka Road. Here you'll instantly travel through a thousand years of memory on the snowy plateau. Highly recommended: the "Snowland Long Song" history exhibition on the second floor. Must-see treasure: the "Double-Body Pottery Jar."

(Note: Free! Reserve 1-7 days in advance via official account or website. ID required for entry. Closed on Mondays!)

05 Experience Thangka Painting and Tibetan Incense Making

Source: Xiaohongshu @Chilie

In art workshops scattered around Barkhor Street, become an "intangible heritage craftsman" for a day! Find a Tibetan incense-making experience class and personally make line incense from spices, bringing back Tibet's unique herbal fragrance.

Or in a thangka studio, experience Tibetan mineral pigments and exquisite brushwork aesthetics, becoming a half-day "magic brush Ma Liang." Not only not tiring, but also inherently healing and stress-relieving.

06 Visit a Tibetan Carpet Factory

Source: Lhasa Cultural Tourism

At the Kawajian handmade Tibetan carpet factory in the western suburbs, slowly wander through the light-and-shadow-dappled weaving workshop. Watch up close as craftsmen use traditional hand-knotting methods, turning colorful wool threads into exquisite Tibetan carpets with skillful hands.

07 Experience Tibetan Medicinal Bath

Source: Photographer/Hu Wangguang

After a day of walking, no more sore feet! Arrange a Tibetan medicinal bath using natural herbs. The 38-42°C water temperature perfectly soothes fatigue, dispels wind, and activates blood circulation. Soak for 20 minutes then wrap in a towel to sweat — your whole body becomes clear, perfectly relieving travel exhaustion.

(First-time experience: foot soak only recommended.)

08 Lie Flat on the Norbulingka Lawn

Source: Culture Tibet

Norbulingka means "baby garden" in Tibetan. Lying flat on the lawn of "Lhasa's Summer Palace" is the serious business! Pick an afternoon, bring a book and a picnic cloth, and lie down among the pines and cypresses!

09 Chat with Locals at a Sweet Tea House

Source: Photographer/Tansi

Go sit at the Old Guangming Gangqiong Sweet Tea House — extremely high density of locals! Put change on the table and wait for servers to shuttle back and forth pouring tea. One yuan per cup of hot sweet tea, drink to your heart's content.

Add a bowl of beef Tibetan noodles and a piece of fried potato. The bustling atmosphere of this worldly marketplace is absolutely captivating!

10 Drink a Cup of Tibetan-Style Coffee

Source: Xiaohongshu @Zangxi

Lhasa is the city with the highest coffee concentration in China. With 830 coffee shops integrated into streets and alleys.

When tired, sit at a Lhasa street coffee shop and order a "Highland Dirty" — top layer is rich espresso, bottom layer is chilled highland barley wine. The taste explodes! In the coffee aroma mixed with the plateau's unique laziness, sitting in a daze is also an ultimate enjoyment.
