This is a high-altitude outdoor internet-famous route whose magnificence and challenge are comparable to Nepal's EBC, yet it's an entry-level high-altitude hiking trail.
With the gentle charm of "one lake after another" ("one lake after another"), you'll lose yourself in the deepest blues closest to the sky.
This is also a classic entry-level hiking route that can be done year-round. Each season has its own character, perfect for friends who want to try high-altitude hiking but have little experience.
It is — Kula Kangri (Kula Kangri).
Shannan: The Forgotten Soul of Tibet
While most travelers flock to Lhasa and Shigatse, Shannan (山南) — the "true cradle of Tibetan culture" — quietly guards Tibet's most pristine form.
Known in ancient times as Yalong (雅砻), it is the birthplace of Tibetan civilization. Tibet's first village, first kingdom, first palace, and first temple all originated here. It wasn't until the mid-7th century, when Songtsen Gampo established the Tubo Kingdom, that Tibet's political and cultural center moved from Shannan to Lhasa.
Today, Shannan remains the purest preserve of Tibetan culture: the best Tibetan opera artists pass down their art here, the most exquisite traditional Tibetan clothing is woven here, and the densest concentration of cultural relics breathes here.
What's even more astonishing is that nature has been exceptionally generous to this cultural holy land. The mighty Yarlung Tsangpo River meets the majestic Himalayas here, creating unparalleled geographical wonders. Most captivating of all is the sacred mountain guarding Shannan's southernmost tip — Kula Kangri.
At 7,538 meters, Kula Kangri means "Stairway to Heaven" in Tibetan. Like a silver giant, it stands on the border between China and Bhutan, commanding eight surrounding peaks over 7,000 meters.
Legend says it is the son of Nyenchen Tanglha (念青唐古拉山), one of Tibet's four sacred mountains — an identity befitting its majestic, world-dominating presence.
From Lhasa, in just one day, you can travel from the bustling city to this snowy hidden paradise.
No route allows you to see so many snow mountains and sacred lakes at once like the Kula Kangri hiking trail. Almost everywhere you stop, you can simultaneously see snow peaks and lakes. This is the heaven closest to mortals, a generous gift from Tibet to every aspiring traveler.
Journey to the Hidden Realm: From Sacred Lakes to Snow Mountains
🏔️ Yamdrok Yumco (羊卓雍错) — Turquoise Earrings Scattered by a Goddess
As the vehicle crests the 4,990-meter Gambala Pass, Yamdrok Yumco's stunning blue crashes into view without warning.
As one of Tibet's three great sacred lakes, Yamdrok Yumco at 4,441 meters is not a dead body of water but a living entity. It meanders through the mountains, splitting into countless branches like turquoise earrings scattered by a goddess, shimmering vivaciously under the plateau sun.
In Tibetan Buddhism, Yamdrok Yumco is revered as Yamdrok Yumco Dakqin, the "Lord of Vajra Obstacles" and the female protector deity of Tibet.
On a small island in the lake's center, Ritro Temple (日托寺) has stood solitary for over 700 years. This "loneliest temple in the world" is guarded by just one monk.
🏔️ Puma Yumco (普莫雍错) — A Maiden's Blue Tears
Continuing south, Puma Yumco at 5,010 meters will show you what "ultimate purity" means. Known as the "Maiden Lake," "Puma" means "little girl" in Tibetan.
The Tuwa Temple (推瓦寺) by the lake means "Gateway to Heaven." Standing before the temple, gazing at the endless blue ice and the distant silhouette of Kula Kangri, you can't help but wonder: Is this still the mortal world?
Hiking the "Three Lakes," Embracing the Snow Mountains
🏔️ Baima Linco (白马林错) — Lotus Sacred Lake
Round trip ~5KM, elevation gain 350M. Baima Linco means "Lotus Sacred Lake," legend says it is one of Guru Rinpoche's three soul lakes.
🏔️ Zhegong Co (折公错) — Gift of Three Sapphires
Round trip ~13KM, elevation gain 530M. This is Kula Kangri's most challenging route, but also the most rewarding.
🏔️ Jiejiu Co (介久错) — Best Viewpoint of Kula Kangri
Round trip ~9KM, elevation gain 310M. If the first two lakes are appetizers, Jiejiu Co is the main course of this feast.
