First Time in Tibet? Don't Panic — Just Follow These 7 Steps

Planning your first Tibet trip can feel overwhelming. Permits. Altitude. Transport. So many unknowns. You start Googling, and three hours later you're more confused than when you began.

As a local Tibet travel agency with nearly a decade of experience, here's a clear roadmap: 7 steps, from decision to plateau. Each with concrete actions — no fluff.

Step 1: Determine If You Need a Tour Group

This is step one for a reason. Get this wrong and nothing else matters.

If You Hold a Foreign Passport (including HK/Macau/Taiwan)

  • You MUST travel with a licensed tour group. This is not a suggestion — it's the law.
  • You cannot apply for the Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) on your own. You cannot travel independently. You cannot self-drive into Tibet.
  • The TTP must be tied to a registered travel agency and a fixed itinerary.
  • Contact a travel agency at least 15-20 days before your planned departure.

If You're a Chinese Mainland Resident

  • You can travel independently or join a tour — your choice.
  • Independent travel: more flexible, cheaper. Group tour: less hassle, expert commentary, travel companions.
  • For border areas (Everest, Ngari), you need an Alien Travel Permit (ATP) — obtainable at your local PSB before departure (free), or through a travel agency in Lhasa (~100-200 RMB).
Action item: If you're a foreign passport holder, contact a travel agency NOW. The TTP process takes time — don't book your flights first and realize this step is missing.

Step 2: Pick Your Travel Dates and Duration

Duration determines where you can go. Where determines cost.

DurationWhere You Can GoBest For
3-4 daysLhasa city (Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street)Time-crunched, first taste of Tibet
5-7 daysLhasa + Namtso or Yamdrok Lake + ShigatseIdeal first-trip length
8-10 daysLhasa + Shigatse + Everest Base CampClassic deep-dive circuit
11-15 daysLhasa + Everest + Mount Kailash koraPilgrims & adventure seekers

First-timer recommendation: 7-9 days. Enough time for the classic route (Lhasa + Shigatse or Lhasa + Everest), not so long you burn out. For specific month recommendations, see our Best Time to Visit Tibet guide.

Step 3: Book Your Transport to Tibet

Option A: Fly In (Most Common)

  • Best hub city: Chengdu (most flights, cheapest fares)
  • Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA): ~60km from downtown Lhasa. Airport bus: 25 RMB, ~1 hour to city center
  • Nyingchi Mainling Airport (LZY): Lower elevation (2,950m). Consider flying here first to acclimatize before heading to Lhasa — smart for altitude-worried travelers

Option B: Train (Best for Acclimatization)

  • Qinghai-Tibet Railway: Xining to Lhasa, ~21 hours
  • Onboard oxygen supply system. Gradual ascent helps your body adapt naturally
  • Route passes through the Kekexili Nature Reserve and Tanggula Pass — the scenery IS the journey
  • Soft sleeper: ~600-800 RMB. Hard sleeper: ~300-500 RMB
  • Tickets sell out fast during summer (July-August) — book 30+ days ahead

Option C: Self-drive (Chinese License Holders Only)

  • G318 Sichuan-Tibet Highway (Chengdu to Lhasa): Most scenic, best for first-time road-trippers
  • G109 Qinghai-Tibet Highway (Xining to Lhasa): Classic route, better road conditions
  • G219 Xinjiang-Tibet Highway (Yecheng to Lhasa): Most challenging — NOT for beginners
  • Travel in convoy. Carry snow chains, oxygen, and satellite communication

Step 4: Book Your Tour (or DIY Accommodation)

How to Choose a Travel Agency (This Matters)

  1. Licensed and registered: Check the Tibet Tourism Bureau registry. Unlicensed operators can't get you a TTP. Period.
  2. Transparent pricing: What's included? (Permit? Hotels? Entrance fees? Meals?) What's not?
  3. Small vs. large group: 4-8 person small groups offer a dramatically better experience than 20-40 person bus tours. More expensive, but worth it.
  4. No hidden costs: Reputable agencies don't do forced shopping stops or surprise surcharges. Confirm this explicitly before booking.
  5. Emergency protocol: Ask: what happens if I get severe altitude sickness? Is there oxygen in the vehicle?

Booking Your Own Accommodation (Independent Travelers)

  • Lhasa: Stay near Barkhor Street/Jokhang Temple — walk everywhere. Budget: USD 22-50/night
  • Shigatse: Decent city hotels, USD 18-85/night
  • Everest Base Camp: Shared dormitory tents only, USD 12-22/person. Rough but unforgettable

Step 5: Physical Preparation — More Important Than You Think

2-4 Weeks Before Departure

  • Medical checkup: Cardiovascular and lung function. If you have serious hypertension, heart disease, or asthma — consult your doctor.
  • Exercise: Moderate cardio (jogging, swimming). But don't over-train — fitness level has zero correlation with AMS susceptibility.
  • Medication: Ask your doctor about Acetazolamide (Diamox) for AMS prevention. For herbal alternatives like Rhodiola, start 7-10 days pre-trip.
  • Vaccinations: No mandatory requirements. Recommended: flu, tetanus, Hepatitis A.

1 Week Before

  • Stop intense exercise. Prioritize sleep.
  • Avoid catching a cold — entering Tibet with a respiratory infection is a common AMS aggravator
  • Cut back on alcohol and smoking
Important myth to bust: Being fit does NOT mean less altitude sickness. AMS doesn't care about your marathon times or gym routine. Olympic athletes and desk workers face the same hypoxia equally.

Step 6: Packing List — What You Actually Need

Documents (Most Important!)

  • Passport (foreigners) + TTP copy (carry on your person, NOT in checked luggage)
  • National ID (Chinese citizens) + ATP if visiting border regions
  • Travel insurance policy (confirm high-altitude coverage)
  • 2 spare passport photos

Clothing (Layer System)

  • Base layer (wicking): Quick-dry underwear, quick-dry tees ×3-4
  • Mid layer (insulation): Fleece jacket, lightweight down jacket
  • Outer layer (wind/rain): Waterproof shell with hood, waterproof pants
  • Footwear: Waterproof hiking boots (single most important item!) + sandals/slippers
  • Accessories: Wide-brim sun hat, UV-protective sunglasses (plateau UV is brutal), warm gloves, scarf/neck gaiter
  • Skip the formal wear — everything in Tibet is outdoor casual

Medicine & Protection

  • Acetazolamide (Diamox) / Rhodiola / Gaoyuan'an
  • Ibuprofen (for AMS headaches)
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ (non-negotiable, even in winter)
  • Lip balm, moisturizer (the plateau is extremely dry)
  • Gastrointestinal meds, cold medicine, band-aids
  • Motion sickness pills (mountain roads = lots of curves)

Other Essentials

  • Power bank: 2+ (remote areas have no outlets)
  • Insulated water bottle: Hot water on the plateau is incredibly comforting
  • Cash: USD 300-700 (beyond Lhasa, WeChat Pay may not work everywhere)
  • Wet wipes: At Everest Base Camp, there are no showers. Wet wipes are your best friend.
  • Snacks: Chocolate, nuts, energy bars — bring calorie-dense stuff

Step 7: The First 48 Hours — Most Critical

Your first 48 hours in Lhasa make or break your entire trip.

Arrival Day

  1. Do NOT shower! Hot water dilates blood vessels, worsening hypoxia. Wait until tomorrow.
  2. Absolutely NO alcohol! Alcohol dehydrates you and worsens AMS — it's altitude's biggest enemy.
  3. Drink hot water: At least 2-3 liters. Hot, not cold.
  4. Move slowly: Talk slower. Walk slower. Do everything at 50% speed.
  5. Eat light: Digestion slows at altitude. Eat to 70% fullness.
  6. Don't use oxygen "preventively": If you feel okay, let your body adapt naturally. A mild headache is normal.

Day 2

  • Most people feel mild headache and fatigue — this is normal. Hydrate, rest.
  • Light activity in Lhasa (Barkhor Street stroll, sweet tea house), but do NOT climb Potala Palace (too many stairs)
  • If headache is intense, take ibuprofen. If vomiting or symptoms worsen, tell your guide or companion immediately.
  • Still no alcohol.

Day 3

  • Most travelers have largely acclimatized to 3,650m by now
  • You can tackle Potala Palace (but climb the stairs slowly)
  • If you're feeling good, higher-altitude destinations are safe from day 4 onward
⚠ Danger signs (seek medical help / descend immediately): Shortness of breath that persists even at rest. Blue lips or fingernails. Coughing up pink, frothy sputum. Confusion or loss of coordination. These are signs of HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) or HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema) — require immediate descent and medical attention.

2026 Updates to Know

  • Potala Palace tickets: Daily visitor caps during peak season (May-October). Must reserve in advance. Travel agencies can handle this.
  • Lhasa-Nyingchi high-speed rail: In trial operation — will dramatically cut travel times when fully open
  • 5G coverage: Full coverage in Lhasa. Signal remains limited in remote regions.
  • Digital payments: WeChat Pay/Alipay accepted everywhere in Lhasa. Carry cash for remote areas.
